MINISTRY OF POLICE DEPLOYS ADDITIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT IN KATLEHONG FOLLOWING TAXI VIOLENCE

The Ministry of Police has intensified its efforts to stabilise the situation in and around Katlehong following a recent spate of taxi-related violence that has affected the community over the past few weeks.

In response to the escalating tensions, the Ministers of Transport and Police convened meetings with key stakeholders yesterday, including the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) and the National Taxi Alliance (NTA). These engagements were also attended by the Premier of Gauteng and the Gauteng MEC for Transport.

The discussions aimed at fostering dialogue and identifying long-term solutions to prevent further violence within the taxi industry. Following these high-level engagements, the Minister of Police has committed to ensuring that law enforcement visibility is significantly increased in areas identified as hotspots for taxi violence. This includes the immediate deployment of additional members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) to affected areas in and around Katlehong.

“Our primary concern is the safety of the public and the restoration of law and order. No form of violence will be tolerated, and those found to be responsible will face the full might of the law. The Ministry continues to work closely with provincial and local authorities to monitor the situation and ensure that peace and stability are restored. Community members are urged to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies. The Ministry will provide further updates as necessary”, said Professor Cachalia.
