Mpumalanga Police Say They Are Looking for a Suspect Who Goes Around Bribing Traffic Officers with Fake Notes

Mpumalanga, South Africa — Police in Mpumalanga have launched a manhunt for a smooth-talking suspect who’s been bribing traffic officers with fake money — and getting away with it.

The unidentified suspect, described as “charismatic with dangerous levels of confidence,” has allegedly handed out counterfeit notes to at least seven traffic officers in the past two weeks. The notes, believed to be printed on leftover Shoprite flyers, feature a badly drawn picture of Nelson Mandela, a watermarked boerewors, and the words “Legal Tenderish” in Comic Sans.

“He gave me a R200 note, I swear,” said one embarrassed officer, who asked to remain anonymous. “It felt a bit light, but I thought maybe it was the new eco-friendly edition from the Reserve Bank.”
