THE PRESIDENT MUST FIRE THE MINISTER OF POLICE, NATIONAL COMMISSIONER AND REPLACE THE NATIONAL COMMISSIONER WITH GENERAL MKHWANAZI
For years, we have had Ministers after Minister, but the level of crime and new types of crimes keeps rising.
The Commissioner of KZN, General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has today during media briefing answered many unswered questions raised by citizens. It is without doubt that there are high ranking officials who work against progress in fighting crime as a result the numbers keep rising.
South Africa has, in the recent past, experienced a rise in crime, ranging from tank mafias to extortion. And adding to all this, is the increase of drug maffias. Our youth have resorted to drugs for solution because, drugs are easily available. On top of that, there are allegations in various communities with regard to police being part of drug syndicates. For fear and lack of protection for whistleblowers, communities decided to keep mum, so they can spare their lives.
In the history of the new dispensation, there has never been a Minister or National Commissioner who directly confronted the issue of drug maffias. To date, we are told nyaope cannot be classified under the names of drugs currently in use or rather it cannot be determined as a drug that can be classified. How can, for the past 31 years, the Ministry of Police faile to come up with a scientific study that will lead to the classification of Nyaope?
In South African townships, it is highly likely that, in every street there is someone smoking nyaope. It is so because, it is cheap and available everywhere in the country.
In our engagement with nyaope smokers, they’ve raised issues of saying when they try to quit, the sellers approach them and give them for free until they are hooked back to smoking. Surprisingly, police know exactly who sells nyaope and where those individuals are staying.
Nyaope, is a societal destroyer. Amongst other things, it affects ones fertility, it weakens the immune system, this is what we were told by experts. So, those who are taking nyaope shortens their life expectancy incredibly so.
General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has proven to be very different from all the previous National Commissioners and Ministers in police, because, he confronts issues through action not speeches. And he is honest about the outcome he anticipate to see. The role of him as a provincial Commissioner, limits his passion in fighting against crime. Mkhwanazi is suitable to be the National Commissioner as his vision is bigger than KZN. And one thing is that, when KZN fights criminals, criminals move to other provinces because they know that such provinces are very weak in policing. There are provinces that you will even question if there are provincial Commissioners because the National Commissioners vision is too limited to a point that they become invisible.
Forum for South Africa therefore, calls on President Cyril Ramaphosa to consider replacing the National Commissioner with General Mkhwanazi if the President is serious about fighting crime on a bigger scale. And further, remove or reshuffle the Minister of Police to a suitable position, since he lacks strategy in dealing with complex issues like the Cwecwe case just to mention but one.
