THE FREEDOM CHARTER 70 YEARS ON -THE PEOPLE SHALL GOVERN.

Senty years ago, thousands of ordinary South Africans of all races gathered under one roof in Kliptown, Johannesburg, to draft and adopt a document that would guide the country into prosperity.

This document was adopted by everyone at that gathering. It was named the Freedom Charter with a very clear vision for the future of the country.

Amongst other things, The Freedom Charter says the following.

The People shall Govern.
This clause is very clear that the people must be allowed to elect their own leaders, and nobody must decide for them. The people must elect the country’s President and not leave that in the hands of a few sitting in an office.

The people must elect their Premiers in the Provinces.

The people must elect their Mayors, not what is happening at present.

There shall be work and security.
Unemployment has reached crisis proportions, and half of society is without work.

There is no security in the country, everybody is not safe. The murder rate in the country is like we are in a war zone.

There shall be houses, security, and comfort.
Informal settlements are the face of South Africa. People are living in tin shacks – an oven in the summer and a freezer in the winter. They live under very dangerous conditions. No Security and Comfort.

The Doors of Learning and Culture shall be opened.
Students are still in the streets facing rubber bullets and teargas. Some even lost their lives protesting for free quality education.

The Land Shall be Shared Among Those who Work it.
The Black majority, the real owners of the land, are still without land.

In 1994, the ANC won political power, they failed dismally to implement the Freedom Charter. People are still journing to see the vision of the fore-fathers.

Activists and Citizens Forum are calling upon all South Africans to unite and fight for the full implementation of the Freedom Charter.
And to say with one voice,

THESE FREEDOMS WE WILL FIGHT FOR SIDE BY SIDE THROUGHOUT OUR LIVES UNTIL WE HAVE WON OUR LIBERTY.
