LIMPOPO MULTIDISCIPLINARY OPERATION FOILS VEHICLE SMUGGLING ATTEMPT, ONE SUSPECT ARRESTED

POLOKWANE A coordinated anti-smuggling operation in Limpopo has resulted in the successful recovery of a stolen vehicle valued at R400,000 and the arrest of a repeat offender attempting to smuggle the vehicle across the Beitbridge Port of Entry.

The operation, conducted on 23 June 2025, involved a Provincial Tracking Team working alongside external law enforcement partners.

Acting on intelligence that a stolen motor vehicle from Gauteng Province was being transported through Limpopo to the Beitbridge Port of Entry for smuggling purposes, the multi-agency team maintained surveillance until the suspect’s vehicle was spotted on the R521 outside Vivo in the Mara policing area.

The white Toyota Corolla Cross was intercepted and subsequent investigations revealed it had been reported stolen from the Brooklyn policing area in Pretoria over the weekend.

A 29-year-old male driver was arrested at the scene. Significantly, the same individual had been granted bail by the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court following his arrest in April last year for driving a stolen Toyota Hilux GD6 to Musina. His trial for that matter is scheduled for 28 July 2025 at the Polokwane Regional Court.

The suspect will appear before the Senwabarwana Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 25 June 2025, to face charges of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle. His existing bail is likely to be revoked as he has violated his bail conditions by allegedly committing the same offense while on bail.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the ongoing success of these collaborative operations, highlighting the effectiveness of multi-agency partnerships in combating cross-border vehicle smuggling.
