ACCUSED TO STAND TRIAL IN ALLEGED MURDER OF A TEACHER
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has decided not to withdraw the charges against Bafana Mahungela (22), who is accused of kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, and the alleged attempted rape of Delta Park High School teacher Kirsten Kluyts in Sandton on 29 October 2023. This decision follows a thorough review of representations submitted by the defence, which claimed that the State lacks sufficient evidence to implicate the accused. In response, Advocates Siyabonga Futshana and Leisha Surendra presented the State’s position in court, confirming that the prosecution is ready to proceed to trial. The High Court of South Africa, Gauteng Division in Johannesburg, has postponed the matter to 13 October 2025, for the commencement of the trial. The accused will remain in custody until his next court appearance.
