LIMPOPO POLICE ARE GRANTED PERMISSION TO CONDUCT EXHUMATION OF THE CORPSE AFTER THE FAMILY SHOW UP TO BURY THEIR LOVED ONE
Polokwane: The corpse of a year 32 year old African male person who died in a vehicle accident in 2018 and buried by government as a pauper was eventually reconnected with his next of kin.
The police in Mahwelereng were recently approached by the family who had been looking for their son, unknowingly that he had died on the N1 near Mookgophong and a culpable Homicide case was Registered at Mokopane SAPS after his body was identified as an unknown which resulted in the body being buried as a pauper, but later his identity was identified through meticulous police investigation of fingerprints and DNA analysis which resulted in his family wanted his buried body to be exhumed for them to give their loved one a decent burial and get closure on his death .
The exhumation process which started on Monday 05 May 2025, unearthed puzzling and unintended discovery when it came to light that over forty corpses were not buried in terms of the set standard and protocol, after they were buried in a clustered fashion.
The members of police forensics department and local police investigators formed part of the exhumation process as they were the ones who approached the Courts to be permitted to do the exhumation process.
Although it was difficult and demanding task, the corpse was eventually found amongst the other unknown corpses which were also buried as a pauper after a depressing exhumation process.
The Provincial Commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has directed that this unusual discovery be investigated further.
The matter is in the hands of the relevent Department of Health and the local Municipality who are working with the police.
