Teacher stabbed by learner at Kgabareng School in Viljoenskroon
A Teacher at Kgabareng Secondary School was stabbed by a 21-year-old grade 10 learner.
The incident happened on Monday 10 March following an interaction between the Teacher and the learner over the learners late arrival at the school.
According to a statement released by the ANC in Fezile Dabi, the stabbed teacher is also allegedly a Deputy Principal at the school known as HR Dimo.
Dimo is also the Regional Secretary of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU). It’s alleged that Dimo was stabbed on the neck.
The Free State Department of Education Spokesperson, Howard Ndaba said the Free State Education MEC Dr Mamiki Maboya condemns the incident and calls for calm.
The Department however failed to disclose what object was used to stab the Teacher by the learner.
“While the teacher was addressing the matter as part of school procedures, the situation reportedly escalated. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under review to ensure a fair and objective understanding of what transpired.” Said Ndaba.
Classes were suspended on Wednesday 12 March at all Rammolutsi township schools as teachers attended court to witness the first appearance of the learner accused of stabbing a teacher.
MEC Maboya has called for calm and urged learners and teachers to work together in creating and maintaining a safe and violence-free school environment.
“This incident is a deeply concerning travesty that underscores the urgent need for collective action to foster a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all. It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing underlying issues, promoting accountability, and working together to prevent similar occurrences in the future.” said MEC Maboya.
The department said it will deploy psycho-social support services to offer counselling and emotional support to both learners and teachers affected by the incident.
