LIMPOPO WORLD AIDS EVENT CANCELLED IN LEPHALALE

STATEMENT ON THE CANCELLATION OF THE LIMPOPO WORLD AIDS DAY EVENT IN LEPHALALE, 07 DECEMBER 2024

The Limpopo Provincial Government deeply regrets to inform the community that the World AIDS Day Event scheduled for today at the Marapong Sports Ground has been cancelled.

This decision comes considering an unfortunate incident where the tent designated to host the main event collapsed due to gust of wind earlier this morning, 07 December 2024, at approximately 08:00.

We acknowledge the disappointment this cancellation may cause, especially as World AIDS Day is a significant occasion for raising awareness and honouring those affected by HIV/AIDS. We understand the importance of this event to our community and it is with a heavy heart that we take this step to prioritise the safety and well-being of all attendees.

The decision to cancel the event was not made lightly. The time required to erect a new tent – estimated to be between five and six hours – would not allow us to proceed safely or effectively. The safety of our residents is our utmost priority, and we believe that this decision is in the best interest of everyone involved.

Considering this incident, the Limpopo Provincial Government is committed to thoroughly investigating the cause of the collapse. It will ensure that those responsible are held accountable, as it is our duty to uphold the highest standards for events that affect our community.

We recognise that there may be financial implications arising from this event’s cancellation, and we will take appropriate measures to address any fruitless expenditure that may be incurred.

While we are dedicated to supporting local entrepreneurs, this incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of engaging properly qualified service providers for our events. We will take this opportunity to review our processes and make necessary adjustments to prevent such occurrences in the future.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this cancellation may cause and thank our community for their understanding and support. We remain committed to the fight against HIV/AIDS and look forward to future opportunities to come together in solidarity and hope.
