SHOP MANAGER ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTING TO BRIBE POLICE AFTER EMPLOYEE FOUND WITH ILLEGAL CIGARETTES WORTH THOUSANDS OF RANDS

POLOKWANE – A 21-year-old foreign national shop manager and a 34-year-old employee were remanded in custody until Monday, 14 October 2024, after appearing before the Thabamoopo Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession and dealing in illicit cigarettes, as well as bribery.

The two were arrested on Thursday, 3 October 2024, by Polokwane Public Order Policing officers during crime prevention operation in Ga-Chuene village, in Lebowakgomo following a tip-off. According to reports a search of the shop revealed illicit cigarettes valued at over R100,000. The employee was arrested on the spot.

Reports suggest that upon learning of the arrest, the shop manager attempted to bribe the police officers with cash when he arrived at the scene. He was also taken into custody and charged with bribery and dealing in illicit cigarettes.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of police in Limpopo, Major General Samuel Manala commended the officers for their swift actions and for upholding integrity by refusing to engage in corruption.

The police investigations are continuing.
