SEVEN ACCUSED WHO ALLEGEDLY ATTACKED POLICE DURING INITIATION CEREMONY IN DENNILTON REMANDED IN CUSTODY

POLOKWANE: The seven accused Kabelo Makitla (31), Hlame Mathebe(49), Ntwane Mohlamonyane(73), Ramasedi Mathebe(36), Mpaku Mathebe(39), Thabang Mathebe(31), and Paledi Mathabane(47) were
remanded in custody after they appeared at the Moutse Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 23 July on charges of assault on police, malicious damage to property and public violence. They will appear in court again on August 1.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning, 13 July 2024 at Ntwane village in Dennilton, Sekhukhune district.

The police officers were reportedly patrolling when they noticed members of the community attacking each other during the graduation ceremony from initiation school held at the local tribal office.

The officers promptly responded and tried to stabilise the situation, but they were attacked by unruly community members. Two police officers were assaulted, and a Police vehicle was damaged after one community member hit it multiple times with a hard object.

Members of Public Order Policing and neighbouring stations provided back up and swiftly diffused the situation. Five suspects were arrested on the same day while the other two were arrested later on.

It is not yet known what caused the violence.
