POLICE OFFICIAL FACING CHARGES OF CORRUPTION APPEARS IN COURT

A police sergeant belonging to the Vehicle Investigations Unit in Vereeniging, Luyanda Louis Mkaza (44), was granted R5000 bail by the Vereeniging Magistrates’ Court. He is facing three counts of corruption. It is alleged that on 22 July 2023, the complainant in the matter received a call from her husband, who told her that he was arrested for the robbery of a motor vehicle at Meyerton Police Station. It is further alleged that the complainant also spoke to the investigating officer, who introduced himself as Louis Mkaza and demanded a payment of R10 000, to make the case not stand in court.

The complainant managed to only raise R4000 that her husband left for her and met with Mkaza for payment. When they met, it is alleged that Mkaza was accompanied by his wife. The complainant promised to give Mkaza the rest of the money when the husband appeared in court on 24 July 2023. When the husband appeared in court on the said date it is alleged that the complainant paid the R6000 balance to Mkaza while in court.

After a while, when the complainant realised that the husband was not being released and the matter kept on being postponed, she reported Mkaza to the Gauteng Anti-Corruption Unit. Mkaza was then arrested on 27 September 2023 at his workplace. After bail was granted, the matter was postponed to 31 October 2023, for further investigations.
