POLICE FOIL A MOB JUSTICE ATTACK

POLOKWANE: The Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the swift response by the Thohoyandou Public Order Policing (POPS)unit which rescued a 39 year old man from the mob on Monday, 26 June 2023 at about 08:30 in Manamani village.

According to information, the police received a report about members of the community who were busy assaulting a suspect in the village. The Public Order Police were activated and promptly responded to the information that led to a raging mob that was busy assaulting the alleged suspect. They tactically approached the crowd and managed to rescue him.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was involved in an armed robbery incident were a bakery truck that was delivering stock at a local spaza shop was hijacked at gun point. The driver managed to fight the suspects in the vehicle while shouting for help.

The community came to his rescue and one of the suspects was caught while the other managed to escape. He was brutally assaulted until police came to his rescue. The police recovered an unlicensed firearm and seven ammunition.

The Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General MT Hadebe appeal to the community not to take the law into their own hands. “I would like to caution the public not to take the law into their own hands. Citizen arrest is recommended and the suspect should be handed immediately to the police to allow the law to take it’s course other than committing mob-justice which is a crime. The police will not tolerate any form of violence including mob justice”. said the Provincial Commissioner.

A manhunt of the other unknown suspect is underway and anyone with information that can assist with his apprehension should contact the Branch Commander Colonel Nemavhola on 0825657345 or crime stop number 0860010111 or nearest police station or MySAPSApp.

The suspect will appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate court soon facing charges of robbery with a firearm and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
