This role is ideal for a candidate who has completed millwright theoretical modules and is seeking practical workplace exposure in a high-performance manufacturing environment.

The Artisan Assistant position plays a critical support role within the maintenance and engineering function. The successful candidate will work closely with qualified artisans and millwrights, providing hands-on assistance during daily operations, breakdowns, preventative maintenance activities, and planned shutdowns. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The primary purpose of the Artisan Assistant role is to provide semi-skilled engineering and maintenance support to qualified millwrights and artisans during production shifts. The role focuses on assisting with mechanical and electrical maintenance tasks, ensuring equipment is properly prepared, cleaned, repaired, and maintained in accordance with Clover’s operational and safety standards.

This position is operational in nature and requires flexibility, physical fitness, and a strong commitment to teamwork. The Artisan Assistant will work a six-day shift cycle, including weekends and public holidays, and must be comfortable operating in a fast-paced production environment that may involve confined spaces and heavy equipment handling.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

The Artisan Assistant will be responsible for a wide range of support activities that ensure smooth plant operations and effective maintenance execution. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Technical and Maintenance Support

  • Provide direct support to qualified artisans and millwrights during production shifts.
  • Assist with both preventative and corrective maintenance tasks on plant equipment and machinery.
  • Support breakdown maintenance activities to minimize downtime and restore equipment functionality as quickly as possible.
  • Assist during planned maintenance shutdowns, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and safely.
  • Prepare tools, materials, spare parts, and equipment required for maintenance and repair activities.

2. Equipment Preparation and Cleaning

  • Prepare machinery and equipment for repairs by isolating, dismantling, or positioning components as instructed.
  • Clean equipment thoroughly after repairs or maintenance work to ensure optimal performance and hygiene standards.
  • Ensure work areas are kept clean, organized, and compliant with safety and housekeeping standards.

3. Physical and Operational Support

  • Assist with moving, lifting, and positioning heavy equipment and components using appropriate tools and safety methods.
  • Work safely in confined spaces where required, following all relevant safety procedures and permits.
  • Support artisans during complex mechanical and electrical tasks by holding tools, fetching components, and performing basic adjustments under supervision.

4. Compliance, Safety, and Quality

  • Adhere strictly to Clover’s health, safety, and environmental policies at all times.
  • Comply with lockout, tag-out, and isolation procedures when working on machinery.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities meet Clover’s quality, safety, and operational standards.
  • Report unsafe conditions, equipment defects, or potential hazards to supervisors promptly.

5. Teamwork and Communication

  • Work collaboratively with artisans, engineers, supervisors, and production teams to achieve shared operational goals.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally in English, both verbally and in basic written form.
  • Demonstrate respect, professionalism, and the ability to work effectively with senior management and technical specialists.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

To be considered for the Artisan Assistant position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Grade 12 / Matric or equivalent qualification at NQF Level 4.
  • Completed millwright theoretical modules, with only practical components outstanding.
  • Fluency in Business English (verbal and written communication).
  • Willingness and ability to work shifts, including weekends and public holidays.
  • Valid Code 10 motor vehicle driver’s license.
  • Basic computer literacy, including the ability to use standard workplace systems.
  • Demonstrated experience or exposure to working with senior management or technical leadership.
  • Ability and medical fitness to work in confined spaces and industrial environments.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a foundational understanding of engineering principles and a strong interest in technical work, including:

  • Basic understanding of mechanical systems, components, and operations.
  • Basic understanding of electrical fundamentals and industrial equipment.
