National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola revealed shocking details about the alleged influence of businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala over the police force. Testifying at the Madlanga Commission, Masemola claimed a whistleblower warned him about Matlala’s close relationship with his deputy, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, which could compromise police operations.
Masemola stated that the whistleblower advised against Sibiya investigating the kidnapping of businessman Jerry Boshoga due to his alleged ties with Matlala. The whistleblower claimed Matlala directs police operations and shares information with Sibiya, raising concerns about police integrity.
Following these allegations, Masemola suspended Sibiya with immediate effect, pending the outcome of multiple investigations. Sibiya had been embroiled in controversy over his attempts to dismantle the KwaZulu-Natal political assassinations task team.
Matlala faces serious charges, including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, money laundering and kidnapping. He allegedly threatened Masemola over a canceled R360 million police contract, which led to a thorough investigation into his business dealings.
The Madlanga Commission is investigating allegations of corruption, political interference and collusion within the justice system. Masemola’s testimony highlights the need for police accountability and transparency. The commission’s findings could have significant implications for the police force and government leadership.
