THE ECHO CAVES MURDER ACCUSED SENTENCED TO LIFE DIRECT IMPRISONMENT BY POLOKWANE HIGH COURT

POLOKWANE The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has welcomed the decision by Polokwane High Court, after a 29 year old Christopher Mgiba was sentenced to life imprisonment for multiple charges including, House breaking and theft, Attempted murder, Arson, Assault GBH and murder of the deceased Annika Claasen 76 and Hendrik 77 at their residential places in Echo caves, an attractive tourist venue , Sekhhukhune
District in June 2023.

The sentence was handed in on
Wednesday, 27 August 2025.

The Court noted that on 01 September 2022, the accused broke in the place , took safe keys, register and cash (money) properties to the value of R13000,00 .
The suspect was thorough the investigation inked to the incident.
After a year of being in hiding, the accused man came back with intend to rob. He brutally attacked and killed the deceased man and woman who where owners of the busines , with a sharp object and also tortured their business on 03 June 2023 during the day.

The Police opened a case of house breaking business and murder. The accused was later identified and located in Gauteng province in Tembisa ,Ivory Park where he was arrested. The investigation Team after the arrest opposed his bail application until when the matter was finalized on Wednesday 27 August 2025, when he was convicted and sebtenced as follows :

Count : 01-sentenced 8 years imprisonment
Count : 2- attempted murder sentence to 5 years imprisonment
Count: 3- Murder sentenced to life imprisonment
Count : 4- Murder life imprisonment
Count : 5 – sentences to 10 years imprisonment
Count: 06 – 10 years imprisonment
Count : 07- sentenced to 8 year imprisonment
Count : 09 – sentenced to 3 years imprisonment

The court ordered that Count 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,and 9 will run concurrently in count 3 Murder to life imprisonment.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, applauded the meticulous investigation by the Investigating officer, Warrant Officer Justice Mogotla Mantswane, for his delegent’ work and other role players who contributed to the court court outcome.
