COGHSTA must enforce Initiation Schools Act following alleged death of initiates
by Tiny Doraine Ramathabatha Chidi – DA Constituency Head for Greater Tzaneen and Greater Letaba Local Municipalities

Date: 26 June 2024
Release: Immediate

The Democratic Alliance in Limpopo extends heartfelt condolences to the family of a 12-year-old boy from Ga-Wally who tragically passed away after attending the Modjadji initiation school.

The young boy’s parents withdrew the child from the initiation school on 23 June 2024 and he passed away at home the next day.

An investigation was launched to determine the circumstances around this tragic incident.

Given that this is not the first incident where young boys have allegedly lost their lives at these schools, the DA calls on the Department of COGHSTA to ensure that all initiation schools in the province adhere to the requirements of the Limpopo Initiation Schools Act of 2016 and that clarity be provided on the alleged death of two initiates at an initiation school in Sekgosese.

We will be visiting the family in Ga-Wally in due course and encourage the community to support the family during this difficult time.
