ACCUSED SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS DIRECT IMPRISONMENT FOR CYBERCRIME

NORTHERN CAPE – A 38 year old, Mr Elrico Kaizer Kasper was today, 22 May 2024 convicted and sentenced by De Aar Regional Court to five (5) years direct imprisonment for Cyber Fraud.

During March 2023, Kasper posted on his Social media page that ‘some people’ were planning to assassinate President Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa during his visit at De Aar on Human Rights day celebration. A disruptive operation consisting of Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team and Crime Intelligence was operationalized and the team located the said accused. He was then taken in for questioning and he admitted to have posted such, citing the frustration of unemployment.

He made a numerous court appearances until his sentencing.

Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head Major General Steven Mabuela congratulated the team including the prosecution team for the sterling work done.

Also the National Prosecuting Authority welcomes the sentencing of the accused and hopes this sentence will work as a deterrent to other perpetrators of cybercrimes. That is it important that people should be aware that dissemination of false information through social media platforms, will lead to people being prosecuted.
