A 25 YEAR-OLD MALE SUSPECT NABBED FOR ASSAULT ON POLICE AND INTERFERENCE IN SEKHUKHUNE DISTRICT
POLOKWANE: The 25 year old male suspect who formed part of the group of demonstrators during a court appearance of Mr Pieter Groenewalt and Stephan Hendrick Greef when they made their second court appearance for attempted murder at Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court ,was remanded in custody when he appeared on Thursday 2024/01/25 .
Francois Van Der Merwe is facing charges of assault on police and interference with police in their execution of their duties.
The matter is postponed to Thursday 1 February 2024 for further investigation and formal bail application.
It is alleged that on Wednesday 2024/01/24 the police blocked the route leading to the Magistrate’s Court building in Groblersdal as part of crowd control when the suspect who was accompanied by a group of people became unruly and confrontational , pushing their way marching towards the court. It was at the time when one of the members trying to bring about control, was violently pushed to the ground.
The reinforcement from police came to their colleagues rescue and arrest the suspect. The suspect is allegedly also facing charges of assault in Gauteng province.
Police investigations are continuing.
