SAFER FESTIVE SEASON OPERATION SHANELA IN LIMPOPO NETS 1 828 SUSPECTS AND RECOVER 11 FIREARMS

POLOKWANE The intensified multi-disciplinary weekly safer festive season operation Shanela conducted from 04 December until 10 December 2023 in all five districts of Limpopo resulted in the arrest of 1828 suspects for various offences. The multi-disciplinary forces also recovered
11 firearms and 60 ammunition.

Other notable successes recorded during the week under review include 11 stolen/hijacked motor vehicles, 980 counterfeit cigarettes sticks, 2219 grams of Crystal Meth, 2198 grams of Methcathinone and 20 grams of Nyaope drugs were among items recovered during the operations.

The arrested suspects aged between 19 and 61, were charged for various offences such as murder, attempted murder, sexual offences, assaults, robberies, possession of unlicensed firearms and suspected stolen properties and drug related crimes.

In addition, 118 roadblocks and 4 285 stop and searches were conducted as part of heightened visibility in identified crime hotspot areas.111 Liquor control operations were conducted and 69 Shebeens closed, whereas 1568033ml of liquor confiscated and 372 fines issues for non-compliance with liquor Act.

The Provincial Commissioner of police in Limpopo Lieutenant General, Thembi Hadebe has lauded the arrests and urged the members to continue to fight crime in all corners focusing on our identified crime hospot areas. She further indicated that criminals should not think the police have let their guard down now that the 16 Days of Activism Campaign has passed as men and women in blue will continue with various initiatives and operations to arrest perpetrators of such atrocious crimes,”concluded Lieutenant General Hadebe.

Some of the arrested suspects have started to appear before their respective Magistrate’s Court across the province.

The police are combat ready to ensure the safety of citizens and deal with any eventuality across the province during this heightened festive season period and beyond.
