UBER DRIVER DENIED BAIL

UBER DRIVER DENIED BAIL

The Pretoria Magistrates’ Court sitting at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Services, denied bail to an Uber driver, Tshepo Calvin Masola (40). He is facing charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and possession of ammunition. It is alleged that on 18 July 2023, while the police were patrolling at Sunnyside, they noticed a suspicious-looking man. When they approached him, the accused ran away. The police gave chase and caught up with him while trying to jump a wall and he was arrested. In court through his legal representative, he told the court that he intended to plead not guilty and asked the court to be released on R2000 bail.

The state prosecutor Lorinda Gey Van Pittius opposed his bail application and told the court that the accused committed this offence while he has a pending case of a similar offence of possession of firearm and ammunition, that is appearing at Pretoria Magistrate’s Court. Magistrate Kruger agreed with the state that the state had a strong case against the accused and that the accused failed to indicate to the court that, it was in the interest of justice that he be released on bail. Therefore, bail was denied, and the matter was postponed to 15 November 2023, at Court 16 for Reginal Court allocation.
