POLICE ROOT OUT ILLEGAL FIREARMS IN SEKHUKHUNE AND ARREST FIVE SUSPECTS

POLOKWANE: The Police in Limpopo are striving to remove illegal firearms off the streets by all means. Five suspects were arrested and five firearms as well as several live ammunition were recovered in separate incidents under Sekhukhune District.

During the arrest that was effected in Roosenekal policing area on Saturday 08 April 2023, a 50- year-old man was charged with assault, pointing of a firearm, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

This after the suspect allegedly threatened a group of local people with a firearm who were reportedly involved in a land dispute. The suspect was apparently called by his friend to assist, upon arrival at the said place produced a firearm and threatened the crowd and in the process assaulted one of the people with it. The suspect and his friend then left the scene.

The suspect was later arrested at his residence and police recovered one illegal firearm with 80 live rounds as well as 15 shot gun ammunition.

Another suspect aged 27 was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Burgersfort town by crime prevention members who were performing patrol duties.

Two additional suspects aged 32 and 35 were also apprehended in Mecklenburg for pointing of a firearm and possession of an unlicensed firearm which was recovered from a pit toilet.

Furthermore, members of the Marble Hall Crime Intelligence Unit together with Nebo Crime Prevention members also managed to effect an arrest of a 32-year-old man in Nebo policing area following a positive tip-off. One unlicensed firearm with ammunition was seized.

“I would like to thank the police members for their commitment and dedication in ensuring illegal firearms are removed from the wrong hands which were possibly going to cause harm to innocent lives during the Easter celebrations.” said the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.

All these suspects have appeared before the respective Magistrate’s courts in Sekhukhune District today on Tuesday 11 April 2023 facing charges of assault common, pointing of a firearm, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Police investigations are continuing.
