PROVINCIAL COMMISSIONER CONDEMNS VIOLENT PROTESTS THAT LED TO THE ARREST OF FIVE SUSPECTS

POLOKWANE: The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has condemned the acts of public violence that characterized the protests in Masemola policing area in Sekhukhune District yesterday on 15 March 2023.

A group of service delivery protesters gathered at Apel Cross along the R579 road and started using stones, bricks, and metal scraps to block the road.

Members of Public Order Policing were summoned for intervention and subsequently managed to quell the situation and arrested two males and three women.

“We issue a strong warning to everyone intending to protest that anyone who blocks public roads, burn tyres and tremble on the rights of others during protests will be dealt with harshly and this includes arresting perpetrators,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.

The suspects, aged between 31 and 51, will appear in Nebo magistrate’s court tomorrow on Friday 17 March 2023, facing charges of public violence.

Police investigations are continuing.
