DA reports sewage spills in Lepelle Nkumpi to the Green Scorpions

Yesterday, the DA laid charges at the Environmental Management Inspectors (Green Scorpions) against Capricorn District and Nkumpi local municipalities.

These charges were laid due to the municipalities violation of Section 107 of National Environmental Management Act and Section 24 of the Constitution for the neglected sewer system, which continues to pollute the environment around Lepelle Nkumpi local municipality.

During an oversight conducted last week, we found three leaks that pollute the environment and pose health risks to residents:

Raw effluent spillage in ward 15 next to a business area in a popular spot for residents to gather. It is a health risk to the residents of ward 15 and to the people who utilise the centre for leisure and entertainment,
In ward 4 sewerage raw effluent runs along the road which passes in front of the Zebediela hospital. It flows into open area in the village of Magatle where it poses a health risk to residents and their livestock. There is a dilapidated structure which seems as if it was intended as a sewage plant, but is incomplete and left open, and
The Lebowakgomo sewerage plant project commenced years, but remains incomplete. Raw effluent flows into an open space in the village of Makurung where livestock graze and drink from the stream.
The DA will not allow further compromise of service delivery to the residents of Lepelle Nkumpi local municipality by the unconstitutional behaviour of deployment ANC cadres.
