LIMPOPO DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS, ROADS AND INFRASTRUCTURE CONTINUES WITH ASSESMENTS OF DAMAGED ROADS.

The Limpopo Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, together with its entity Roads Agency Limpopo(RAL) are continuing with assessments on roads infrastructure following a trail of destruction caused by heavy rains. Thus far, the teams have found that 11 bridges have been washed away and several roads were severely damaged across the province. The hardest hit is the Mopani District with six bridges, three bridges in the Waterberg District and two bridges in the Vhembe District.

The total damaged road infrastructure is expected to increase as it continues to pour in the province, but so far the estimated damage to infrastructure amounts to millions of rand.

MEC Nkakareng Rakgoale has welcomed the declaration of the National State of Disaster by government as this will enable intensive intervention and response in dealing with the situation.

“In the department we have teams that are working tirelessly at district level, together with their colleagues from sister departments, RAL and affected municipalities, in conducting assessments after which intervention will be made on both gravel and tar roads. We urge road users to drive with extra caution and not attempt to cross overflowing bridges.” Says MEC Rakgoale.
