Schooling disrupted at Ficksburg following death of grade 9 learners

The Free State Department of Education is calling for calm in schools in Ficksburg.

The department will be in consultation with all relevant stakeholders to stabilize the situation in the area in order for teaching to resume.

On Monday, 6 February 2023 , the department senior management led by Chief Director: District Management, Mr Sam Mokgobo, will meet with all relevant stakeholders at the Setsoto Local Municipality.

The death of the grade 9 learner has sparked anger on Thursday, 2 February 2023 from Tlotlisong Secondary School learners, joined by learners from other schools who went on sporadic rampage – overturned police vehicle, destroyed teachers’ cars, damaged school properties and disrupted learning and teaching in all Fickburg schools.

The department is hoping to finalize these consultations on Monday to allow learning and teaching to resume normally either on Tuesday or Wednesday.

‘We can not afford to lose more notional time,” said Mr Mokgobo.

“We need our learners to be in class learning and allow the process of investigation to take its course on all allegations raised,” he said.

The department urge learners and the community to give this process a chance and allow schooling to resume without any further delay

Pychosocial support and counseling will be made available to learners who require such service.
