MORE THAN TWO THOUSAND DRIVERS CHARGED FOR OVER SPEEDING

2 377 drivers have been charged and fined for over speeding, with six arrested for the offense since 01 December 2022, through the Festive Season Road Safety campaign.

The campaign that focuses on the implementation of traffic law enforcement and road safety promotion plans, is aimed at coordinating road traffic enforcement plans across provincial and municipal authorities to provide maximum impact and reaction, during one of the busiest periods in the year in terms of road use.

This intensive campaign was encouraged by the need to instill safe road user behavior and to encourage voluntary compliance. The campaign also seeks to increase detection and prosecution of critical road traffic offenses. All these efforts are aimed at reducing crashes, fatalities, and serious injuries.

The campaign has also succeeded in getting:

•221 184 vehicles stopped and checked
•36 411 vehicles weighed
•8 922 drivers tested for alcohol
•19 drivers arrested for drunk driving
•1 476 drivers charged for driving documents
•1 305 drivers charged for vehicle defects
•1 238 drivers charged for overloading passengers and goods
•69 vehicles impounded, and 42 vehicles discontinued

Traffic authorities in the province will be strengthening visibility and enforcement in the next few days leading up to the Christmas weekend to ensure safety on our roads. Road users are equally expected to play their part by obeying the rules of the road, to arrive alive at their various destinations.
