LIMPOPO SHOWCASE CAPABILITY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
Limpopo Provincial Government will celebrate International Day of Persons with
Disabilities under the theme Empowering Persons with disabilities through
resourceful, and safe environments“. Limpopo Premier Mr. Stanley Chupu Mathabatha
will deliver a keynote address on the 3 December 2022, at New Covenant Church,
Tshilapfene Village, Thulamela Local Municipality.
The day will be used to showcase capabilities of persons with disabilities in various
aspects. Empowerment of persons with disabilities in resourced and sustainable
environments is a right and it empowers South Africa to achieve more.
The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was
proclaimed in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 47/3. The
observance of the day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize
support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to
increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities
in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
Cabinet in 2013 approved that November 3 – December 3 be celebrated as National
Disability Rights Awareness Month (DRAM), and that 3 December be celebrated as the
International and National Day of Persons with Disabilities, with the objective of
showcasing the abilities and talents of persons with disabilities as productive members of
society.
This year, IDPD will be celebrated in Thulamela Municipality, Vhembe District to
showcase how persons with disabilities survived and continue to strive under the effects
of covid19 pandemic. Agriculture is one of the key economic drivers of Limpopo province
as outlined in the Limpopo Development Plan together with mining and tourism.
Mr Thanyani Godfrey Mudalahothe is farmer in Ngwenani ha Mapholi, who has been
identified as a focal point where the province will showcase the abilities of persons with
disabilities in agriculture. In Limpopo persons with disabilities organize themselves and
get support from government, business, traditional authorities and society in general to
enable them to contribute to key economic sector.
