POLICE ARREST SUSPECT FOR ILLEGAL POSSESSION AND TRANSPORTATION OF CHROME WORTH R300 000 IN LEBOWAKGOMO

POLOKWANE: A 52-year-old man was arrested by SAPS members at Lebowakgomo Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) on Saturday, 21 February 2026, at around 10:00.

Members received credible information regarding a horse-and-trailer truck allegedly transporting precious minerals along the R518 within the Lebowakgomo policing precinct. They swiftly operationalised the information and, while conducting a lookout patrol, they spotted a truck fitting the provided description traveling along the R518 road.

The vehicle was stopped and searched. Police discovered that the truck and its two trailers were fully loaded with chrome.

When requested to provide legal documentation authorising the possession and transportation of the chrome, the driver failed to do so. He further indicated that the chrome had been loaded from an illegal mining site at Atok Village

The driver was immediately arrested for illegal possession and transportation of Chrome. The confiscated chrome is estimated to be valued at R300 000.00. Police also seized a white Sitrak truck with two blue trailers, with an estimated value of approximately R2 million.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 23 February 2026.
