Limpopo Content Creator Reforms Dog Care After SPCA Intervention
Hendrick Makuya, a content creator from Ha-Makuya Mutshikilini outside Thohoyandou, Limpopo, has changed his ways of spoiling his dog, Bobby, after a visit from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). Makuya was known for feeding Bobby buckets of KFC, particularly on the dog’s monthly “birthdays”. However, concerns arose when Bobby appeared thin and possibly malnourished, sparking widespread criticism.
The Louis Trichardt branch of the SPCA stepped in, educating Makuya on the dangers of feeding dogs fast food. They explained that KFC and similar foods contain spices, salt, and other ingredients that can cause harm to dogs, including upset stomachs, allergic reactions, and long-term health issues. To help Makuya transition to a healthier diet for Bobby, the SPCA provided proper dog food as a one-time gesture to demonstrate the correct dietary needs for dogs.
Makuya admitted to being unaware of the negative impact of feeding Bobby KFC, stating he thought he was giving his dog a “soft life”. With the SPCA’s guidance, Makuya is expected to prioritize Bobby’s health and well-being by adopting a more suitable diet.
This incident highlights the importance of proper animal care and the role organizations like the SPCA play in educating pet owners. For those interested in supporting animal welfare initiatives, SPCAs across South Africa, including Tshwane SPCA and Highveld Ridge SPCA, accept donations of pet food and funds to care for animals in need
