Tragic Incident Debunked: Nkhobiso Senior Secondary School Learner Killed Off School Premises

The Free State Department of Education has become aware of voice note circulating on WhatsApp groups, falsely claiming that a grade 9 learner from Nkhobiso Senior Secondary School was killed on school premises on October 22, 2024.

While the Department is troubled by the death of the learner, it is also important to correct the facts regarding the circumstances of the incident.
Contrary to the rumors, 16-year-old Kabelo Chaka was allegedly killed by three grade 10 learners from the same school approximately 720 meters away from the school at 6:30 pm.

Any death especially of a young person under such circumstances is regrettable irrespective of where it happened.

In this instance the perpetrators, Thabo Mohlominyane (18), Tumelo Lethetsa (18), and Teboho Mokoena (17), were arrested on October 24, 2024, and appeared in court on October 28, 2024, with their next appearance scheduled for November 5, 2024.

Police have confirmed that the incident did not occur on school premises and that there is no evidence of prior convictions or murders involving the alleged perpetrators, as suggested in the voice note. The police are currently investigating the motive behind the incident.
