DA requests Limpopo Health Committee to address dubious hospital coal tender

The DA in Limpopo has today written to Limpopo Legislature Health Portfolio Committee Chairperson, Simon Mathe, to request a meeting with Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba and Acting HOD, Muthweiwana Dombo to provide clarity on the details of the department’s coal tender and progress on any investigations into the matter.

This follows a report by CONLEF that the Limpopo Department of Health (LDoH) issued coal supply tenders to 14 hospitals that do not have coal facilities and had never used coal before. The MEC also reportedly acknowledged an investigation into the matter while the HOD reportedly had no knowledge of any internal investigation into the matter.

The LDoH has never raised the issues of an internal investigation or the irregularities around this coal tender with the portfolio committee on health. This is no surprise for a department that has shown to be adverse to accountability and transparency over the years

Ramathuba, together with her acting HOD, must appear before the portfolio committee and provide all relevant details around the awarding of the tender, any investigations into the matter and any consequence management for officials involved. We have written to the committee chairperson to expedite the matter.

We will also submit Parliamentary Questions to obtain all relevant information in the awarding of the contract.
